VOLUMES release Coming Clean EP via Fearless Records

Los Angeles quintet VOLUMES are primed to set heavy music ablaze in 2019 with their Coming Clean EP, along with an upcoming fourth full-length for Fearless Records.

Stream the Coming Clean EP here - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLsBWlr67U5NsCXKWec7xKD0VblNDdBBmz
Following a successful headline tour and run alongside Born of Osiris, VOLUMES devoted nearly eight months to piecing together their next musical chapter. They recorded throughout Southern California, working out of Butter Studios in Venice, West Alley Recording Studios, and Farias Productions. Self-producing and keeping everything "in-house and organic," they enlisted Kyle Black [Pierce the Veil, New Found Glory] and Max Schad [Veil of Maya] for an additional perspective.

Ultimately, Coming Clean represents a moment of clarity both personally and artistically. "Some of us have struggled with depression or drug issues," admits Soudani. "We've battled those demons personally and together and found a nice stability and substance. At the same time, we're coming clean with ourselves. We're men now. Life is more precious. The music reflects this honest idea of opening up."

VOLUMES introduce this era with the bludgeoning banger 'NO LOVE' [feat. Fronzilla] and it's the band's heaviest declaration yet with an uncanny assist by the Attila frontman and longtime friend. "It speaks on the idea of how we've come from the bottom and the dirt, but we’ve been here a long time, so you're going to have to show some respect," Soudani states. "We know where we stand. We're asserting our identity. We've found ourselves and know what we're doing."

Elsewhere, 'ALIVE' slips between the cracks of caustic guitars and punishing growls into a soaring clean refrain, "Am I alive?" Then, there's 'Until the End'. Evocative of what Soudani calls "the original Volumes sound," it illuminates the dynamic range of their attack, seesawing back and forth from a visceral vocal volley into a harmonic reprieve.

"Coming Clean is an emotional moment for us," Soudani says. "I hope you feel something when you hear it and gain some perspective. This is VOLUMES. Coming Clean hints at where we're headed in the future."

Volumes are:

Myke Terry - vocals
Gus Farias - vocals
Diego Farias - guitar
Raad Soudani - bass
Nick Usich - drums

DARKTHRONE release new single 'The Hardship of the Scots'

DARKTHRONE release new single 'The Hardship of the Scots'

Darkthrone 2019 - SQUARE.jpg

DARKTHRONE have released their new single 'The Hardship of the Scots'. The track is taken from the band's new album Old Star, which is due for release on 31st May 2019 via Peaceville.

Listen to 'The Hardship of the Scots' here: https://youtu.be/i6h4b-Jm8iU

Gylve ‘Fenriz’ Nagell introduces the track:

There really isn’t just ONE song that can represent this album,'The Hardship of the Scots' was my song and although we also wanted one of Ted's songs to preview the album Ted took one for the team and we chose my song! His songs are somewhat faster with more black metal in them but still has slow thrash and doom, my song here seems to start with an INVASION OF YOUR PRIVACY RATT-ERA riff or perhaps one from The Ultimate Sin by Ozzy Osbourne but when I had bicycled my guitar from the Bombshelter and sat down on the porch to strum it, the fact is that (as far as I remember) this entire 'The Hardship of the Scots' track was done in an hour and I remember texting Ted about it.

Ted had just been around to collect loads of vinyl I was giving to him. Anyway, so as usual I didn't have an elaborate scheme as to what the riffs where coming from, but like last album’s preview song I can tell you what it sounds like to me. This doesn't mean I was inspired by what it sounds like, ok? So riff number two has both normal doom and some evil death/black notes in the second part. Then there's the break to make the song more linear (old 80s underground trick I used on the last album and this album) and then a riff emerges which I guess I would like to sound like that awesome break riff in an
Infernö track called 'Thrash Metal Dogs Of Hell'. 1:50 out in that track is one of my fave slow thrash metal riffs EVER and it kind of reminds me of first Exodus too. But my riff kinda went even slower and may remind more of a Celtic Frost tempo. I think it's a splendid break and riff anyway and suddenly while I was playing my guitar, I came up with this final riff part which is not as primitive as we are used to but rather sounds like some more epic 20-year-old Enslaved or something. Anyway, that's what it sounds like to me NOW but when I was making it, I was just jamming my guitar on the porch after having bicycled it home. SNAKES!!”

The legendary Norwegian longstanding partnership of Fenriz and Ted “Nocturno Culto” Skjellum, return with Old Star, their first studio album since 2016’s hugely popular Arctic Thunder. With a mastery and endless dedication to the art of the riff, they cut through six new epic tracks, taking in the best of the old school of heavy and extreme metal plus a large dose of doom-laden riffing, and channelling it through the grime of the underground.

Fenriz enthuses:

"Old Star – again we are here with THE RIFFS! A while after our previous Arctic Thunder album it became apparent that we would continue in that same style, BLACK OLD HEAVY METAL with slow thrash, classic doom and slow death metal.
As many have focused on the 70s sound over the last 20 years, the mix on our new album has ended up being more 80s than ever. The songs are more metal than ever! Ted's songs have a lot of black metal in them, faster and slower but also doomier parts and recurring parts. My songs are more linear written, it’s an ancient 80s underground trick, with breaks, all slow heavy or slow thrash, classic doom or slow death."
He continues, "All in all it is our most 80s album so far and our most metal one to date with drum sound typical for the 80s USA/German market and damned lyrics, which are all written by me. We feel that Old Star is the big brother of Arctic Thunder. More solid and with even better riffs."
Old Star was recorded at the band’s Necrohell 2 Studios, with engineering and production duties carried out by vocalist/guitarist Nocturno Culto, complemented with a perfectly organic mix courtesy of Sanford Parker (Voivod) at Hypercube Studios, & mastered once more by Jack Control at Enormous Door. The stellar cover artistry comes courtesy of Chadwick St John, titled 'The Shepherd of the Deep'.
Over the course of 30 years, Norway’s DARKTHRONE has become a staple of the global black metal genre, forging a legacy as one of the most renowned and influential bands in its illustrious and often infamous history. In the formative years following their 1987 inception, DARKTHRONE initially started with a strong concoction of thrash and then death/doom metal experimentation, with broader musical influences spanning from the 60s to the 80s, before the debut album Soulside Journey was unleashed in 1991. Never ones to follow convention or stand still even then, the band soon embraced a much darker, more primitive form of expression with the now iconic second album A Blaze in the Northern Sky, and the rest became history.

Old Star will be released in various formats, each including handwritten lyrics in the booklet or inset. Pre-order the album here: https://darkthrone.lnk.to/OldStarPR

FURY share new single 'Mono No Aware'

FURY share new single 'Mono No Aware'

FURY have established themselves quickly. They built on the melodic legacy of Orange County by way of heavy, rhythmic, start-stop guitars and frontman, Jeremy Stith's referential and poetic lyrics.
Today they release their latest single, ‘Mono No Aware’ which came to fruition after a conversation Stith had about Japanese Cherry Blossoms. He explains, "the idea Mono No Aware is a Japanese term for the awareness of impermanence, something that I've thought about every day since in some way or another and has helped guide me where I need to go."

Failed Entertainment is FURY's take on the human experience, an attempt to describe every person's life and how it interacts with others through unmatched highs, desperate lows and mundane middles. The band’s ‘Run For Cover’ debut was recorded by Colin Knight and their own guitarist Madison Woodward at Paradise Records, in Anaheim, CA. This time, the band sought new surroundings and outside expertise, collaborating with engineer Andrew Oswald at Secret Bathroom Studios, mixing engineer Jack Endino (Nirvana, Soundgarden) and Parquet Court’s Andrew Savage. The new batch of songs shows growth in all directions: the slow parts more brooding, the melodies catchier, the lyrics even further on the limb.
FURY have also announced a North American tour in June. Highlights include Chicago, Saint Vitus in Brooklyn, Toronto, Texas and a record release show in Santa Ana with Sheer Mag and Ceremony just before LA's Sound & Fury Fest in July.
UK dates to be announced soon.

Recorded with the core duo of frontman Drew Thomson, producer/percussionist Ian Romano(Attack In Black, Career Suicide, City & Colour) and a rotating cast of musicians, Through A Wall revives the raging sound of SINGLE MOTHERS' earliest output. While the band's 2017 LP, Our Pleasure, acclaimed by outlets such as NOISEY, BrooklynVegan, Allmusic, and CLRVYNT, showcased poppier sides of Thomson’s songwriting, he has since found a separate outlet for those inclinations in his solo project The Drew Thomson Foundation. As a result, Through A Wall is packed top to bottom with blistering riffs, breakneck tempo shifts, and mosh-ready breakdowns, channelling the intensity of the group’s live performances.

"[Through A Wall] is faster, angrier, and really doesn't give a crap" Kerrang!

"Single Mothers are back, boiling over with rage, and we couldn't be happier." - Revolver

Through A Wall is out now on Dine Alone and Big Scary Monsters. It is available for purchase here

MTXS stream debut single 'Mould' and release album details

MTXS are a new relentless force in UK metal/hardcore who have been decimating underground venues since forming late 2017. Last night they unveiled new single 'Mould', which is taken from their upcoming debut album Ache, which is set for release on 7th June.

Premiered via Slamworldwide, check out 'Mould' here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dc83EfrTW_Q

On 'Mould', the band commented: "We decided for Mould to be the debut single as it best represents the album. With it changing relentlessly and going through different emotional states it grasps everything within the album in one song; from anger and realisation, to confusion and grief, it captures everything that describes Ache in one heavy punch."

MTXS is an abbreviation of the Greek word ‘metaxis’ - a state of in between; neither here nor there; stuck in purgatory - a metaphor for the darkness the band convey with their punishing new sound. The incomparable energy and aggression of their live show has become one of the UK’s best kept secrets, but all will be unveiled to the world with the release of Ache.

Produced by Erik Bickerstaffe of LoatheAche is 10 tracks of pummeling low-tuned dissonant hardcore with strong messages of hope, anger and reflection, touching on many issues including corruption, abandonment, self-awareness, mental health and more. Taking influence from the new wave of American hardcore (Vein, Code Orange, Kublai Khan) as well as classic death/ groove metal (Lamb Of God, Pantera) and nu-metal (Korn and Slipknot), MTXS have created a sound that’s as pummeling as it is hook-laden and infectious. Incorporating blastbeats, huge grooves, guttural roars, rhythmic screams, dissonant chords and beatdowns, MTXS masterfully weave these aesthetics and more together to create a ferocious sound that’s very much their own.

MTXS have supported Oceans Ate Alaska and Cannibal Grandpa in Europe, supported Counterparts at Upsurge Festival and played numerous shows across the country with their friends in Lotus Eater, Loathe and God Complex. The band have also headlined many shows including a two-week run in Europe; an impressive achievement for a band who’ve only been only been around for 18 months.

Demand on the live circuit has resulted in the band being booked to headline Summit Fest, appear at Castlefest and in May they will embark on a UK headline run, with many more live dates to be announced. MTXS are not only the UK’s fastest rising independent act, they promise to deliver the most intense musical experience you’ll see in 2019.

Check MTXS out on the following dates:

20th April - Manchester (Goodminds Festival) - AATMA

3rd May - Luton - Harvey's
4th May - Cardiff - Fuel Club (with Borders)
5th May - Kings Lynn - Workers Club
6th May - Guildford - Holroyd Arms
7th May - London - Black Heart
8th May - Southampton - Suburbia
10th May - TBA
11th May - Birmingham - TBA
12th May - Worthing - Bar 42
19th May - Kickup Festval, Sheffield

VEXES announce album details and stream Tears For Fears cover

Fast-rising US post-metal quartet VEXES have announced the release of debut albumAncient Geometry on 21st June 2019 in Europe via Silent Cult and have unveiled their unique cover of Tears For Fears' track ‘Head Over Heels’.

Check out ‘Head Over Heels’ here: https://youtu.be/LNoZHi4q0NQ

VEXES are an experimental, eclectic, groove-infused new post-rock/metal outfit who have garnered much attention in their native land and promise to do the same in the UK / Europe with the release of Ancient Geometry.  The special European version features three stunning bonus cover tracks, including ‘Head Over Heels’ as well as ‘Shattered Dreams’ by Johnny Hates Jazz and ‘Voices Carry’ by ’Til Tuesday.

The band comment: "We are thrilled to be working with Silent Cult and for the opportunity to have our music heard by an expanded audience with the international release of our debut album Ancient Geometry. We’ve been writing for the better part of nine months or so now for the follow up to AG, and as a “break” from that process and as a thank you to anyone that has listened to us thus far, we wanted to put our spin on a few of our favorite songs from the 1980s. The songs we chose were very influential to us in various ways, both from the standpoint of our personal lives and in the general vibe of our music. There is a lushness and delicate quality to the sound of the original tracks, and such a great pop sensibility, which is something that we try to incorporate in our sound, blended with ferocity and vulnerability. We hope that everyone enjoys our take on these classic tracks."

Pre-order Ancient Geometry here: https://orcd.co/ageurope

From start to finish, Ancient Geometry takes listeners on a journey – starting with the bombastic ‘Hellion’, the first song VEXES wrote together. The track flips between thrash beats and surging, choppy riffs layered with atmospheric guitars. After battering the listener with songs like ‘Lift’ and ‘Decisions are Death Here’ – each of which veer from tuneful and textural to brash and furious, VEXES tone down and emphasise vulnerability over anger. The distorted guitars and unsettling tempos don’t disappear, nor does the juxtaposition of crooning and roaring vocals, but on songs like ‘Plasticine’ and ‘Lush’ the vocals become more consistently tuneful and the backing instrumentation less pugnacious. At the midpoint of the album there’s ‘No Color’, a multifaceted song that flows like a daydream turned into a nightmare and features a guest rap by Islander member Mikey Carvajal.

VEXES came together after John Klagholz and Charlie Berezansky’s previous band, Vessl, called it quits. The two were interested in starting a heavier project to filter some different ideas into. After finally completing their demos, they sent them to a few respected musician contacts of theirs, and within a few weeks, heard back from former A Life Once Lost drummer Justin Graves. Graves was impressed with the tracks and hinted at wanting to join the band.

“As soon as I heard these songs, I knew this band was something I immediately wanted to be a part of,” says Graves“Then, not long after I decided to join, we were in need of a new bassist. I rang up my former A Life Once Lost bandmate and friend Bobby Carpenter, he heard the tracks, and the rest is history. It was nice for Bobby and I to take a long break from our extensive touring years (we’ve both been touring since our teens) and figure out how to be adults, but it’s time for us to get back out there. We’re stoked to be doing it with VEXES.”

VEXES are a new voice in the dark gunning to show others the light. Klagholz says, “I like to play things I don’t hear other bands doing. It’s impossible to create something that’s totally original, but that’s not going stop us from trying.”

Ancient Geometry was engineered and mixed by front-man Charlie Berezansky at Skywire Sound Studios in West Creek, NJ, and mastered by Mike Kalajian (The Dear Hunter, Saosin, Emmure) at Rogue Planet Mastering.

VEXES are:

Charlie Berezansky – Vocals, Guitar, Keyboard
John Klagholz – Guitar, Keyboard
Bobby Carpenter – Bass
Justin Graves – Drums

Puerto Rican prog-metal band AVANDRA have released new single 'Even//You', taken from their upcoming new album Descender, which is set for release on 26th April via Blood Music.

Check out the lyric video to 'Even/You' here: https://youtu.be/NBvuDHgbqM8

This follows first single Derelict Minds which features ex Dream Theater keyboardist Kevin Moore. Premiered via Prog Magazine, check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7b0m_iJ_kw

Pre-order Descender  here: http://www.blood-music.com/store/

Having started as a one-man project by Christian AyalaAVANDRA were born from hurricane-fuelled strife, and now becoming one of the scene’s breakout acts. Given their humble origins, AVANDRA were never meant to play live. However, after releasing the band’s first record, Tymora, demand was so high that Ayala felt obligated to bring his work to life on stage in May of 2017. By the time their second show rolled around a few months, later Puerto Rico had been ravaged by Hurricane Maria. Alone in the dark, Christian wrote what became the second Avandra record, Descender.

Having gained international attention with their debut release, the band found themselves on multiple year end lists. One fan, Nelson Varas, the director of such award winning metal music culture documentaries in the Caribbean as Distorted Island, Metal Island, and Songs of Injustice, ended up writing to Blood Music about the band. Suddenly, an act with the most humble of beginnings found themselves signed to a top notch tastemaker label with the power to push them over the top. Avandra’s hard work was starting to pay off.

2018 was a whirlwind for the fledgling prog act as they travelled to New Hampshire to record their new album with Daniel Schwartz of Astronoid, then enlisting the mastering talent of the legendary Magnus Lindberg. Featuring guest spots from current and former members of Haken, Dream Theater, and Astronoid, the band seems poised to unleash something truly different and special. In the midst of it all, they even performed a hometown show in San Juan as opener for metal legends Orphaned Land. From out of the storm’s wreckage, Avandra have spent over a year preparing this stunning sophomore release, and shall soon come forth and unleash prog metal mayhem.

Tour dates to be announced soon.

BLC promo shot 4.JPG

UK rock quintet BRIGHTLIGHT CITY have released a video for their new single 'Through The Lens'. The track is taken from the band's debut album The Harmony & The Chaos, due for release on 17th May 2019 via Undead Collective Records.

Check out 'Through The Lens' here: https://youtu.be/j-0ca7cN81k

Of the debut album BRIGHTLIGHT CITY comment:

"The Harmony & The Chaos has a number of themes in every individual song. The title itself was something that we have been using for a while now. For us it started as a description of us live with someone stating ‘you guys sit in a pocket between harmony and chaos’. The more we thought about it the more it made sense with the themes for songs we were writing as well as how we see live shows. It is also a great description of where we are in society and within ourselves skating the fine line between harmony and chaos."

Pre-order The Harmony & The Chaos here: https://orcd.co/thtc

See BRIGHTLIGHT CITY live at one of the following dates:

21.04.2019 - Swindon, Level 3
24.04.2019 - London, Tooting Tram & Social
03.05.2019 - London, Notting Hill Arts Club (supporting Mantra)
08.05.2019 - London, New Cross Inn
01.06.2019 - London, Camden Rocks Festival
29.06.2019 - Canterbury, Melofest

The Harmony & The Chaos follows BRIGHTLIGHT CITY's highly-regarded 2017 EP Our Future's Not Dead, which saw support from Kerrang!, Powerplay Magazine, and more. Eleven tracks of polished UK rock which tread the lines between robust British Indie and classic alt-rock, The Harmony & The Chaos is an accomplished record from a band ready to show their full potential. Elements of Hundred ReasonsThricePress To MecoReuben and more clash and collide in the LP which is bursting with melody and attitude.

Highly personal, the album covers a variety of viewpoints from a group passionate about homegrown talent (running their own record label), literature, politics and art. From fake news ('Feast On Fear'), to war photography ('Through The Lens') and Italian governmental corruption ('Songs Of Dissent'), The Harmony & The Chaos is a disarmingly deep and multi-faceted release.

In their history BRIGHTLIGHT CITY have supported Rise Against, Millencolin, Dead!, Blood Youth, Press To Meco, Max Raptor, Fizzy Blood, Bad Sign, amongst others, a company of bands which marks the newer UK group as ones to watch.

UK grime-metal quintet HACKTIVIST mark their momentous return with the video for their brand new single 'Reprogram', their first to feature their new line-up. A band that have played on Reading & Leeds and Download Festival main stages and toured alongside Korn and Enter ShikariHACKTIVIST welcomed guitarist James Hewitt to their line-up earlier this year. Now they are fired up with a reignited passion, ready to show the world what they are truly made of.

James Hewitt comments on the news:

"Having taken a couple of years away from the music industry, I’d started to miss writing music and playing live.. and then comes the opportunity to join Hacktivist. Having played some shows together previously, I’d been friends with Josh and Rich for a few years - I think that helped things click very early on in terms of writing. We’re constantly firing ideas back and forth and have plenty of songs finished, and already playing a couple of the new ones live. They’re going down great so I can’t wait to add some more into the set!"

Co-vocalist Jot Maxi adds:

"When I joined the Hacktivist ranks, I thought that a new front-man was all they needed and once I filled that role we were ready to get to work creating insane conscious futurist music like never before! Though I quickly realised there was some further internal defragmentation required and the writing of new material had to be put into hyper-sleep for a bit longer than we’d have liked. Our live shows however are always in high demand and we’ve stayed active destroying it on stages all over the place! Finally, now that James Hewitt has enlisted as our new guitarist/producer there is a true sense of unity between the five of us and I’m beyond ecstatic that everyone will get to hear not only the ground-breaking new flavours he has brought to H, but the warp drive energy and lyricism that’s been burning in me to contribute to the future of Hacktivist ever since I came on board!!"

HACKTIVIST recently released a cover of The Prodigy's 'Spitfire' as a tribute to the late Keith Flint. Check it out here: https://open.spotify.com/album/7vqT4omVpaNBGRvXxvN4Q1

The band will perform at Submit Fest and Taman Festival over the summer, with additional live dates set for later this year - more details to be announced soon.

Current live dates:

25.05.2019 - Rotterdam NL, Baroeg (Submit Fest)
02.08.2019 - Golubitskaya RU, Krasnodar Taman (Taman Festival)

In a world where nobody knows the entire truth about why we’re here, who built the pyramids and what they were for, why we have such a destructive nature towards our planet and ourselves…A world where the only thing we know for sure is that we are living in a well-constructed downward spiral and the technologies that were supposed to make things better are of course making us worse. In a world where any attempt to find the truth or talk about these systematic anomalies got labelled as a “conspiracy theory” – finally the conspiracies are stepping out of the darkness and theories are being proven daily. As Science Fiction is becoming more and more factual and it’s getting very clear that we are on the brink of a revolution of sorts, HACKTIVIST are here to paint a silver lining around our clouded society. With not only a musical revolution of their own, continually blending genres in a way like no others, H also represents a voice that isn’t afraid of saying what needs to be said. They are already living in the future, you have the choice to either be shaped by it or to stand up with them and help shape it together. They're HACKTIVIST, they’re H, are you?
