Born from the ashes of their respective former bands, HIGH ON FIRE are celebrating their 20th year. Inspiring countless bands in their twenty years, HIGH ON FIRE are riding high on a wave of thunder and tumult.

The three piece consisting of Matt Pike (vocals/guitar), Des Kenzel (drums) and Jeff Matz (bass) is the band at their most fully realised and utterly relentless, who headlined London's Desertfest in May.

Through six full-lengths and a number of live releases and EPs, the punching command of HIGH ON FIRE has established the band as an unmatched and wholly unmistakable force in the realm of heavy metal.

Beginning with 2000’s The Art of Self Defense, the band joined independent label Relapse Records in 2001, and unleashed what would become three of the most dynamically influential heavy music releases of the 21st century thus far with Surrounded by Thieves (2002), Blessed Black Wings (2005), and Death Is This Communion (2007).

A year after signing with the highly regarded eOne Music, HIGH ON FIRE released 2010’s Snakes for the Divine, a powerhouse record that saw the band supporting Metallica in the same year. With widely respected producer/engineer Kurt Ballou at the helm, 2012’s De Vermis Mysteriis brought HIGH ON FIREimmediate and virtually universal acclaim, before 2015's monstrous Luminiferous confirmed the band's status as the litmus test for all things heavy.

Exclusive premieres: why, or why not?
vid1.jpg

In the context of streaming in the music industry – specifically, within the band-PR-outlet triangle, exclusivity doesn’t really exist. An ‘exclusive premiere’ by and large means the chance for a publication to post the stream of the song / video / album first. Once the music is online, there is no lock on that material to prevent other publications from sharing.

If it’s a large enough band, once their material is online, it’ll start to spread across publications like wildfire and there aren’t many mechanisms to prevent this and ensure exclusivity. As a result, the truly big bands in our world tend not to premiere. This, combined with the continued strangling of Facebook’s organic reach (a subject for another, lengthier blog post) means that premieres are no longer a method of instantly getting sure-fire hits on new material.

Generally speaking, the mood in the rock & metal music industry is shifting away from exclusive premieres. At least in the traditional sense. It’s not a hard and fast rule, but over the year(s), we at HoldTightPR have seen more and more sites starting to phase out the regularity of their premieres.

So why is it something we still offer, as PRs?

Firstly, and slightly paradoxically, the top-level sites tend only to take certain bands if they are offered an exclusive premiere. It’s something of a carrot, and a chance for that particular band to have their music on a particular publication when normally they wouldn’t share the news on new material that is public.

They’re a point of credit for that band: a moment of kudos and a signal to other sites and eyes in the industry (booking agents, management, labels, etc) that maybe the band are worth paying attention to. Beyond this, it’s a step in the long-term game of allying that band with that publication, and opening up further opportunities.

Premieres can be seen as both the end point and opening of a campaign. The opening is the chance of the foot in the door with an esteemed publication; the end the chance to stream a highly-anticipated album following a successful and drawn out PR campaign.

However, premieres are not to be taken lightly. Successful album streams become successful because of this anticipation. This takes work and time and is not a factor unique to albums but can also be true of single/video streams too.

As sites become pickier, premieres become harder. The blunt truth of the matter is that there is greater pressure from bands to have premieres deliver than from publications to deliver premieres. They tend to be a lot of work for publications without huge gain. Unlike album campaigns, premieres are time-critical, working to an exact date and sometimes with short turnaround. Plus, because of the very nature of 1-1 exclusivity, there are occasions where premieres fall through within the allotted time-window.

So where’s the future? How do we work against the phasing out of premieres but deliver more fans to bands and continue to operate in the band’s best interests?

For us, there are two broad answers. Firstly, we’re starting to look to new styles of premieres, working with this the idea of exclusivity:

  1. Premieres become a part of longer-form online features, where the new music is used as a discussion point of wider topics. Readers are drawn into the topic and led to the new music. Any other bands discussed within the feature might be inclined to share and spread the news.

  2. Look to premiere directly with channels who have large subscriber-bases on YouTube. Views are more guaranteed but at the expense of original content as the raw music files are hosted on that channel. Branding and the chance to increase band channel subscribers might suffer as a result.

  3. Embed the raw file directly on an outlet’s Facebook, and team this with a post of the music on the same publication’s website. This dual approach delivers views and a permanent reminder of the premiere onsite.

Secondly, and more importantly, the crucial thing – industry-wide – is to re-evaluate the role of premieres. No longer are they a way just to get instant hits and launch a band into viraldom. Instead they’re just one key tool in the longer game of building a successful band, who have a successful relationship with the press and developing their fanbase.

British contemporary post-rock sextet TALONS are streaming 'Southern Shade', the new single from upcoming third album We All Know, to be released via Holy Roar on July 27th 2018. Pre-orders are available here

Stream the track:

Spotify
Soundcloud

And at: https://www.gotalons.com

Across the nine songs on their new album TALONS expertly weave multiple layers of instruments and beats, showcasing real compositional visceral powerexhibiting their skills in structure and dynamic control. The musical portraits the band paint take us through a variety of sonic landscapes rich in vivid imagery, from bleak to warm and everything in between.

The progressively ambitious sextet, who celebrate their tenth anniversary this year, excel with their third release, carving their own exciting niche in contemporary music. Led by a dual violin instrumentation, TALONS variously touch on world / folk music, with more than occasional allusions to Indian classical music; modern classical; and heavy, expansive post-rock.

Recorded in August 2017 at Greenmount Studios in Leeds, inside an old church, with Lee Smith and Jamie Lockhart at the controls, We All Know was mastered by long-time collaborator Tom Woodhead (¡Forward Russia!). This is the second album TALONS have recorded at Greenmount Studios following 2014’s New Topographics. The recording process was done live as a full band with very few overdubs in order to give the recordings a more intimate and direct feel.

Forming in 2008, TALONS signed with Big Scary Monsters in 2009, releasing their debut single, "The Pearl" on 7” vinyl as well as a split single with And So I Watch You From Afar, featuring the song “Bethlehem”.

The band recorded their debut album, Hollow Realm, releasing in November 2010 (CD - Big Scary Monsters; 12" vinyl - Topshelf Records; special extended CD - Xtal Records, Japan). It received critical acclaim, notably from BBC Music, Drowned In Sound, Rock Sound and The Line of Best Fit. TALONS also recorded a Radio 1 Maida Vale session for Huw Stephens, and toured the record across the UK and mainland Europe.

Four years later, TALONS returned with their second album, New Topographics. A change in mood, more rhythmic and expansive, the album again received high praise in the press, including DIY magazine, Clash and Drowned in Sound. The album was also ranked #2 best album of 2014 by Already Heard website. In promoting the album TALONS made notable appearances at ArcTanGent, Truck Festival, Damnation Festival and Tramlines, as well as support slots with Pianos Become the Teeth and Amenra.

A stunning listen, combining Opeth at their heaviest and most dynamic, Mastodon at their earliest, and Gojira at their most venomous, Mire is a step up from a band who were already impressing.

Equal turns bleak, dark, stark, and beautiful, Mire is an album which makes true the cliché “a journey of a listen”. From the apocalyptic opener ‘Choke’ to the haunting soundscapes within the eponymous track, this LP is as impressive in its power as in its multi-layered dynamism.

US thrash metallers BLACK FAST premiere new song ''Silhouette Usurper"
retouch-4958-2 Credit_ Kenny Williamson.jpg

US thrash metallers BLACK FAST have released the second single from their upcoming LP Spectre Of Ruin, out July 13th via eOne.

First premiered via Toilet Ov Hell, check out the the song "Silhouette Usurper" below.

Guitarist Aaron Akin said:"'Silhouette Usurper' was one of the first songs we finished for this new record. Compared to our other songs, this is most song-liest of songs we have written."

Pre-order Spectre Of Ruin here.

BLACK FAST had previously released a music video for "Cloak of Lies" via Metalsucks last month to kick off the new album cycle.

BLACK FAST’s Spectre of Ruin was produced at Mana Studios in St. Petersburg, Florida, with Erik Rutan, the Hate Eternal frontman who has worked with Cannibal CorpseGoatwhore, andSix Feet Under. It’s all killer, no filler, demonstrating the destructive force of neo-thrash and progressive death-infused heavy metal at its finest.

The band's music is a vibrant soundtrack to society’s collapse and a celebration of defiant resolution. The BLACK FAST mission is ruthlessly simple: champion musical aggression, bark at the moon, raise a fist and headbang like there’s no tomorrow.

The band will hit the road this summer in various stops across the eastern half of the United States. The band kicks it off with a performance at the 17th Annual ShowcaseSTL presented by The Riverfront Times followed by a batch of support dates with Exmortus on the "Summer of Steel" tour. BLACK FAST will then head out with Ringworm until they reach Cincinnati,OH where they'll participate in the first Annual TRANSPLANT FEST with Ringworm Incantation on July 21st.
